3 Ways to make your guitar practice more effective

It does not matter if you are just starting out or if you are an advanced player: We ALL want to get more out of what we are doing. I get it: If you are just starting out, you want to get good very fast. If you are at a decent level already, you want to get even higher as fast as you can.

No matter what skill level you are at, these points are going to benefit your progress and with that your fulfilment you are going to experience in your playing.

Practice shorter periods but more often throughout the day

This one is probably the easiest to implement right away. If you plan to practice 30 minutes every day, split it up like 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon, or 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes in the afternoon and 10 minutes in the evening, or 20 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening, you can come up with the right split on your own, for sure.

This will take away the “heavy burden” of a long practice session and you will feel much lighter to begin with your practice, which gets even more important when you practice longer periods of time per day (more than 1 hour).

See it like this:

  • If you practice once a week – Not much progress
  • If you practice three times a week – some decent progress
  • If you practice every day – very much progress
  • If you practice SEVERAL times a day – unstoppable progress!

The brain is used to adapt to, what you give to it and how often you do it and it uses the breaks in between to get the new skills integrated into its synapses.

Try to see it like this. Not the MORE you practice, the better you get (of course, this plays a role as well) but to be more exact: the more OFTEN you practice, the better your results. There are also other factors like HOW you practice. Which leads to the next two points.

Stay focused 100 %

This works perfectly in combination with the previous piece of advice.

Switch off your mobile phone and avoid everything that could distract you, tell your family members to not disturb you when you are practicing and feel how much more peaceful your practice session just got.

The better you focus on your practice, the better the results, the more fun you are going to have with playing your favourite instrument!

Study with a great guitar teacher who knows how to motivate yourself

If you have any trouble implementing what you just read above, ask your teacher if he can help you with that. If after doing so, you still feel playing guitar is a burden to you, it may be the case, that your teacher is not right for you.
